In Aztec mythology, Xolo dogs were believed to be humankind’s best friend for both the living and the dead. They are spiritual guides and protectors, shielding the souls from danger on their journey back from the Mictlán, the underworld. Xolos are often found depicted in altars to celebrate the lives of pets that have passed and protect us from beyond.
The Mexican marigold, known as the cempasúchil, is a bright orange or yellow flower, that has a very strong scent that leads the departed home from their burial places. The flowers’ golden hues guide the soul home where their family await, and their beauty decorates altars everywhere for the holiday’s cheerful celebration of life.
It is believed that the monarch butterflies are messengers, flying back and forth between the living and the dead; they also represent souls on their homebound journey. In Mexico, large monarch butterfly populations decorate the skies as they make their migration south for the winter, coinciding with Día de Muertos celebrations.
Candles act like beacons, illuminating the path for the spirits through the nine levels of the underworld, Mictlán. Lit candles also honor the departed, placed on altars next to photographs of family members, along with their special belongings and other ofrendas.
